Optical Coherence Tomography
Given the vast number of changes and problems that can affect our eyes over the years, especially when we have other medical conditions present like diabetes or hypertension, getting a clear picture of what’s happening deep inside the eye is essential - especially before we develop any vision disturbances as a result.
Optical Coherence Tomography (often referred to as an ‘OCT scan’) is a painless and non-invasive imaging technique where our optometrists use the OCT camera to capture images of the deeper parts of the eye. These images provide high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the:
● Retina: the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of your eye
● Vitreous humour: the jelly-like substance that fills your eyeball
● Macula: an area at the centre of your retina responsible for central vision
● Optic nerve: a nerve that sends signals from your eye to the brain to produce the images we see
The images produced by OCT provide detailed information about the structure and function of the retina and the other parts of the eye, and can be used to diagnose and monitor a variety of eye conditions. Importantly, at your appointment, we can compare your current images to the ones you’ve had at previous eye exams at any Kevin Paisley clinic, allowing us to track even subtle changes over time. Having this information can be key in implementing the right prevention and management strategies.
How Does An OCT Scan Work?
OCT works by shining light into the eye and measuring the backscattered light to create detailed images of the different layers of the retina. OCT uses technology called interferometry, which measures the interference between two light waves to determine the distance and reflectivity of the structures in the eye. The resulting images can be used to detect conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular holes and retinal detachment.
What Does An OCT Scan Feel Like?
An OCT scan is painless, and your eyes will not be touched, nor will you feel anything. Think of it like looking into a microscope - simple and painless. The scan is complete in just a few minutes. Occasionally, we may need to put eye drops into your eyes to dilate your pupils, however this is also painless.
